Valmiera is the largest city in the Vidzeme region. The city is located about 100 km from the capital city of Riga in a northeasterly direction and situation along the Gauja river. Main industries include the food industry, fiberglass manufacturing, metalworking, wood processing and the making of furniture. The town has an interesting history. The location where the city is now has been inhabited for approximately 9000 years. The actual town of Valmiera was founded around 1323. It was destroyed during the Great Northern War in 1702 and had to be rebuilt.
